Georgia Independence Day 2025

The Invitation to the excellent Independence Day celebration of Georgia at Rosendals Wärdshus on Djurgården. After Crownprincess Victoria of Sweden’s visit to Georgia relation between Sweden and Georgia became stronger, and the Georgian Independence Day 2025 could be celebrated for the second time at Rosendals Wärldshus on Djurgården with special guests like the dance folk group ”Shohia” doing Georgian Folk dances. May 26th was celebrated as a public holiday until Georgia became part of the Soviet Union in 1922. During the Soviet era, the celebration of regional public holidays was suppressed. It was not until the collapse of the Soviet regime in 1991 that May 26th regained its status as a national holiday.

Georgia formally seceded from the Soviet Union on April 9th, 1991. This date is now observed as a national holiday—Day of National Unity—marking 33 years since independence.

How is Georgian Independence Day Celebrated?

Independence Day in Georgia is marked by political speeches, official ceremonies, flag-raising events, concerts, festivals, exhibitions, and public gatherings celebrating the nation’s history and cultural heritage.

In the capital, Tbilisi, the day begins with an oath-taking ceremony followed by speeches from national leaders, expressing gratitude for Georgian sovereignty and freedom.

Families and communities celebrate with traditional Georgian feasts known as supra. These meals are led by a Tamada (toastmaster), who offers toasts to the nation, followed by tributes to honored guests.

Georgian hospitality is renowned worldwide—hosts ensure that guests’ cups, often made from ram’s horns or porcelain replicas, are rarely empty.
