May 26th was celebrated as a public holiday until Georgia became part of the Soviet Union in 1922. During the Soviet era, the celebration of regional public holidays was suppressed. It was not until the collapse of the Soviet regime in 1991 that May 26th regained its status as a national holiday.

Georgia formally seceded from the Soviet Union on April 9th, 1991. This date is now observed as a national holiday—Day of National Unity—marking 33 years since independence.

Families and communities celebrate with traditional Georgian feasts known as supra. These meals are led by a Tamada (toastmaster), who offers toasts to the nation, followed by tributes to honored guests.

Georgian hospitality is renowned worldwide—hosts ensure that guests’ cups, often made from ram’s horns or porcelain replicas, are rarely empty.
