Moroccan Ftour celebrating ” Coexistence and Shared Values”

Under the banner of coexistence, intercultural dialogue, and shared values, the Residence of the Kingdom of Morocco in Stockholm hosted a Ramadan ftour on Wednesday, March 5, attended by Sweden’s Minister of Culture, Parisa Liljestrand, along with members of parliament, ambassadors accredited in Stockholm, and representatives of various faiths.

Speaking on the occasion, Morocco’s Ambassador to Sweden, Karim Medrek, highlighted the distinctiveness of the Moroccan model of religious coexistence. He recalled that for more than twelve centuries the Kingdom has been a space of pluralism where Muslims, Jews, and Christians have lived side by side in a spirit of mutual respect.

The ambassador also underscored that, under the enlightened leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, Commander of the Faithful, Morocco continues its efforts to promote a moderate form of Islam and to strengthen interfaith dialogue.

Beyond its convivial character, the gathering represented, according to the ambassador, a renewed call for dialogue, mutual understanding, and respect for the principles of living together. Medrek also emphasized the strength of the longstanding friendship between the Kingdom of Morocco and the Kingdom of Sweden, founded on mutual respect and a shared commitment to dialogue, cooperation, and peace.

Medrek further noted the special symbolic significance of this year, marked by the convergence of the holy month of Ramadan with Lent and the celebrations of the Lunar New Year—an illustration of the richness of spiritual traditions and the convergence of major religious observances.

For her part, Swedish Minister of Culture Parisa Liljestrand welcomed the initiative, praising Morocco’s longstanding tradition of interfaith dialogue aimed at promoting peace, tolerance, and understanding among different religious communities. She also expressed her appreciation for the opportunity to take part in the event and share in this tradition, noting that in 2023 UNESCO officially inscribed “Iftar, or Ftour,” on the list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Held in an atmosphere both solemn and warm, the gathering reflected the Moroccan tradition of making Ramadan a moment of sharing that transcends borders and beliefs. Participants stressed that promoting mutual respect, coexistence, and dialogue remains essential in the face of today’s global challenges.

Organized for the fourth consecutive year, the ftour has in recent years become a key moment for intercultural and interfaith dialogue in Stockholm.
