Date: Wednesday, 27th November 2024
Venue: Embassy of Sri Lanka
This year marks the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and Sweden, one of Sri Lanka’s earliest formal diplomatic ties established after regaining independence.
Sri Lanka, formerly known as Ceylon and officially the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, is an island nation in South Asia. Located in the Indian Ocean, it lies southwest of the Bay of Bengal and is separated from the Indian peninsula by the Gulf of Mannar and the Palk Strait. The country shares maritime borders with the Maldives to the southwest and India to the northwest.
With a population of approximately 22 million, Sri Lanka is home to diverse cultures, languages, and ethnic groups. The Sinhalese people constitute the majority, followed by the Sri Lankan Tamils, the largest minority group, primarily residing in the northern regions. Other longstanding communities include the Moors, Indian Tamils, Burghers, Malays, Chinese, and the indigenous Vedda people.
Sri Lanka’s documented history spans over 3,000 years, with evidence of prehistoric human settlements dating back 125,000 years.
